Frequently Asked Questions:
What is the book about?
The author, Nectanebus II (his pen name), has done considerable research into the Egyptian language. After considering many experts' theories that the language is based on sound, the author came up with his own theories about how the language might have sounded like. To give the reader the idea, he came up with a story in a fictional myth. When the reader finishes he has some idea about what the vowels may have been. Many books show that this ancient language is a set of pictures (or hieroglyphs) which appear to be a set of consonants. Discover for yourself what the vowels might have been. Find out what the Egyptians may have called a cat in their own language.us
How was this book published?
I, Mitchell Rumpf, am the publisher of The Cat Speaks Egyptian. It was an experimental project. I wanted to find out what it was like. After checking with several print shops in Lansing, Michigan, I went with 3 local print shops. Many of the print shops taught me a lot about my print job. I left the assembly to myself and now I regret it. I have over 300 of these small books that must be hand assembled. I use local craft stores to get my binding. I get what is available and usually on sale. It takes over 1 1/2 hours to make these by hand. It is relaxing, but tedious. It was a good experiment, but I think I could have cut my costs to deal with an internet printer.
The cover is unique, but how was it made?
The author drew the characters by hand on a blank sheet of paper. A digital camera was then used to photograph the characters. Computer software was then used to shrink the characters down to a size that would fit the cover: the size of an index card folded in 1/2. A printer prints the characters onto some heavier weighted paper from the local craft stores and these become the front and back covers to the book. Each cover must be produced individually. Due to time required, only 50 of these limited editions will be produced. The remaining books will utilize specialty papers and a printed title glued onto the cover page.
